Dr. Michael Kheirallah
Chairperson
Victorian Lebanese Community Council
9 August 2024
Dear Dr Kheirallah,
It is my great privilege to congratulate the Victorian Lebanese Community Council (VLCC) on its 17th Anniversary.
Australia has a long and proud relationship with its Lebanese community; this anniversary is a key milestone in recognising the contributions of the VLCC towards the proud tradition of multiculturalism fundamental to Australian society.
It has been my honour to work with the VLCC over my time as the Federal Member for Wills, having attended their launch of ‘A New Home’ in 2022. This documentary told the story of Lebanese immigration to Australia, reiterating the importance of multiculturalism and social cohesion within the context of Lebanese settlement in Victoria.
In 2019, it was an honour to be invited to the 12th anniversary Iftar Dinner hosted by the VLCC. This event once more reminded us of the importance of ongoing collaboration between governmental organisations and multicultural community groups in creating a diverse and harmonious society.
In my recent appointment as Special Envoy for Social Cohesion, I am again reminded of the importance of the VLCC and its ongoing commitment to bringing together Victoria’s Lebanese community with vital services, governmental agencies and not-for-profit groups.
Amidst escalating conflict in Lebanon, I would like to offer my concern and support to our Lebanese community, particularly those impacted by violence in the region. For any members of our community with relatives still in Lebanon, please advise them to leave.
I care deeply about ensuring the safety of all Australians in the region and invite all members of the Lebanese community to reach out should they require assistance or support in this matter.
I continue to work collaboratively across the government to advocate for a lasting solution to this conflict.
I look forward to celebrating this fabulous achievement with you this evening, and to continue developing the relationship between the VLCC and the Albanese Government.
Please do not hesitate to contact my office on (03) 9350 5777 or via email at peter.khalil.mp@aph.gov.au should you require any further information.
Yours sincerely,
Peter Khalil MP
Special Envoy for Social Cohesion
Federal Member for Wills
