I wish I could be there myself – but given that’s not possible I’m really pleased Peter Khalil could represent Albanese Labor Government. I hope to be able to take part in some of the Community Council’s future events.

Thanks to the Victorian Lebanese Community Council for hosting this 17th anniversary celebration. Not-for-profit community-based organisations like the VLCC do such great things to enhance strong and positive community relationships and to work closely with all levels of government.

This anniversary not only highlights VLCC’s ongoing efforts to support the Lebanese community in Victoria, but it is also a celebration of the vibrant and invaluable contributions Lebanese Australians have made to our country over a long period of time.

There are now more than 248,000 Australians who identify with Lebanese ancestry, and more than 49,000 here in Victoria. There are more than 178,000 in my home state of New South Wales – and I’ve met with countless Lebanese Australians in my part of Sydney and across the country in my 20 years as an MP.

Since the earliest arrivals, Lebanese Australians have played a significant role in shaping the economic and cultural landscape of Australia, succeeding in every field of achievement – from business and government to medicine, science and technology, academia, the arts and sport. The community has played a very important role in Australia becoming one of the most successful multicultural nations in the world.

We must also acknowledge that these are uncertain times for Lebanon and the Middle East, and the profound impact the current situation is having on the community here. The escalating violence and instability in that region is causing deep concern and distress among Lebanese Australian families.

The Australian Government will continue to monitor developments in that region closely. In such times, it’s crucial that we remain united, and offer support to one another. The VLCC has been instrumental in providing both practical help and emotional support, and also in advocating for those in need.

Our Government will continue to work together with the Lebanese Australian community, and of course the wider community as well, to ensure that the voices of Lebanese Australians are heard and valued and that Australia continues to be prosperous, secure and united.

Congratulations to the VLCC on its 17th anniversary. The VLCC’s work in advocating for human rights and for the Lebanese Australian community here in Victoria is to be applauded. You should all be proud of this significant milestone.

I wish you all the very best for the future.

Thank you.

VLCC acknowledgement

The Victorian Lebanese Community Council (VLCC) acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the lands across Australia upon which we work. We recognise the continued connection of First Nations people to the land, the waterways and to community and kin, and pay respects to Elders past and present.
